The 63-year-old man injured in West Kelowna this morning was hurt hunting, according to the fire department.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue explained that while hunting, the man had sustained a lower body extremity injury.
The man, about five kilometers up a trail near Glenrosa Rd, was caught in challenging terrain. Crews had trouble reaching him due to the recent early season snow.
First responders were also concerned due to the possible onset of hypothermia. However, they said in a release Thursday afternoon, the patient dressed for the elements and was still within cell phone coverage.
Once they retrieved the man and brought him back down to Glenrosa Rd., he was handed off to BC Ambulance for advance care and transport to hospital.
“West Kelowna Fire Rescue would also like to remind residents heading out into the backcountry to be prepared, dress appropriately, leave a plan of where you plan to go and when you plan to return, and to carry a cell phone to call 911 should the need arise,” said assistant fire chief Chad Gartrell of the West Kelowna Fire Department.

A 63-year-old man who injured his leg on a West Kelowna trail had to be rescued by emergency crews, Thursday morning.
The man was about 5 km up a trail near Glenrosa Road, just before 10 a.m. when the incident happened.
It’s unclear how the man hurt his leg and if he was walking alone on the trail.
