Coun. Randey Brophy’s bid to have council give the Peachland HUB project $750,000 has been pushed back.
During an April council meeting, Brophey suggested money be taken from a $2.7 million grant the district received from the provincial Growing Communities Fund.
However, Mayor Patrick Van Minsel noted that the district is still waiting on details on how the money can be spent, and suggested Brophey bring forward a notice of motion so council could discuss the matter at a later date.
During council’s May 23 regular meeting Brophey said the issue would have to be delayed again.
“Specifically because we do not know if the nature of what the HUB is proposing to do with the money falls within the purview of the community funding grant.”
The project will build two district-owned facilities, which are the main HUB building and the food bank building.
Community service non-profit groups are fundraising for the entire project, including asking Penticton MLA Dan Ashton to lobby the provincial government for funding between $2.5 million and $4 million.
The only specific potential provincial funding identified to date is a $250,000 BC Gaming Capital Grant.
The project is also facing tight funding deadlines, which require other funding for the food bank to be in place before applying for the gaming grant in July, and funding for the main building to be in place by June/July 2024.
