Upgrades underway on Prairie Valley Road in Summerland

Multi-use path, water main upgrades included in construction

The municipality of Summerland is beginning improvements on Prairie Valley Road.

Construction began Sept. 18, and will continue until late fall. It will then resume in the spring of 2025.

During construction, work hours will be Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as required.

Municipal staff expect traffic disruptions and delays during the road improvement project.

There will be a detour route for passenger vehicles and vehicles under five tonnes along Dale Meadows Road. Local traffic and commercial vehicles will continue to use Prairie Valley Road with delays of up to 10 minutes.

The contractor and traffic control persons will advise the best route to access properties inside the work zone as the project progresses.

The improvement project will include replacing water mains, drainage work and construction of a new multi-use pathway between Morrow Avenue and Haddrell Avenue.

The project includes around 1.2 kilometres of collector road along Prairie Valley Road between Morrow Avenue and Cartwright Avenue. This will include two full travel lanes and a multi-use pathway.

A water main in the area dates to the 1930s.

Summerland crews have worked on other upgrades in recent years. These have included upgrades on Giants Head Road, Jubilee Road West, Dale Meadows Road and Victoria Road South.
