ARTHURS, BARRY
1934 - 2013
With great sadness we announce the passing of Barry Arthurs on Monday April 22, 2013 at the age
of 78. Barry is survived by Joan,
his loving wife of 55 years; by sons Jim (and Christine), David (and
Muriel), John (and Louise) and daughter Lynne (and Tim); and
by grandchildren Benjamin, Julie,
Jamie, Aynsley, Gillian, Spencer, Victoria and Eilie. He was predeceased by his father
Wallace and mother Dorothy. Barry was born in Vancouver on June 12, 1934. He attended the University of British
Columbia and was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Over his 33 year career with the BC Telephone Company
he worked in Vancouver, Kamloops, Ottawa and Kelowna. Wonderful summers were spent at the family cabin on Little Shuswap Lake. Upon retirement in Kelowna, Barry and Joan enjoyed being grandparents and traveled the world on cruises, overseas trips and on annual trips to Cabo San
Lucas. They loved the people they met and the sights they saw roaming across North America in their motorhome. Their second home was Happy Trails Resort in Surprise, Arizona where they made many good friends and their
Friday Martini Nights were not to be missed. Barry was a golfer, boater, fisherman, handyman, scotch aficionado,
true friend and gentleman. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He embodied Scottish thrift and wisdom, Irish mirth and heart, and a Viking spirit. He rarely displayed his emotions, but he was kind, unselfish and always put the needs of others ahead of his own. His family and close friends acknowledge that parts of him truly were perfect. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the communities at Balmoral Resort and Happy Trails. His final days were difficult, but he was brave and cheerful to the end. Many thanks to the staffs at the Cancer Centre, Kelowna General Hospital and Hospice House for helping to ease his passage. A celebration of his life will be held at the Balmoral Resort Clubhouse , 2365 Stillingfleet Road, on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Centre for the Southern
Interior, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L3, or
Central Okanagan Hospice House, 2035 Ethel Street,
Kelowna, BC V1Y 2Z6.
