We are sad to announce the passing of George Alan Elliot on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017. Alan was born in Kelowna in 1925, the son of George Elliot and Dolly (nee Monford). Alan will be dearly missed by his family: son David (Audrey), grandchildren Sandra Zahara (Randy), Neil Porter, Becky McNeil (Brian), Aaron Elliot (Miranda), Jillian Garrison (David) and 13 great grandchildren, Chad (Phaelan) Zahara, Stephanie (Torin McLachlan) Zahara, Matthew Porter, Nikolas, Caileigh, Jakob, Emily & Ethan McNeil, Amira, Avery, Aria Elliot, Ellison, Ada Garrison. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Sharon Porter in 1986 and his wife, Bea, of 62 years in 2010. Alan was a terrific role model, loved his family deeply and generously supported them in their pursuits and his sage advice was a boon to all. He was actively involved in the community, held leadership positions in a number of clubs and organizations and had a very successful real estate and development career. He spent his early years in Winfield having his father, George Elliot, as his teacher for grades 5 through 8. He transferred to Rutland for high school but left in Gr. 12 to join the army in 1943. Luckily, the war ended before his troop was deployed overseas. He was a good athlete and avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and helped start the Oceola Fish and Game Club. In the late 1960’s he and Bea discovered golf and their life would never be the same. They spent part of the winters in Palm Desert where they could golf and get away from the cold. They were active members of Mountain Shadows and then Kelowna Golf & Country Club. He was an integral part of the senior men’s groups, the Bandits and Good Guys, at KGCC. Alan was a proud member of the masonic lodge of which he served as a grand master for two chapters. He believed strongly in the community work done by the organization and was a life member. Both Alan and Bea were faithful members of St. Paul’s United Church under Albert Baldeo and later attended Trinity Church. Although Alan didn’t complete high school he valued education and funded three bursaries through the Central Okanagan Bursary Society which will continue to be awarded in perpetuity. At his request there will be no funeral. Those wishing to honour his memory may make a donation to the Central Okanagan Bursary Society. Internment will happen at a later date with a small family remembrance to follow. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, intelligent, witty, hard working man who was admired by all who knew him.
