SIMPSON, Joan Katherine Passed away on
November 22, 2009 at 92 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband, Horace Simpson and her beloved son, Stanley. Joan is survived by her daughter Sharron of Kelowna and her son Allan and his wife Jill, of Durham, NC, grandchildren Stuart Kernaghan, of
Vancouver, Catherine Fry and her husband, Brian of Kelowna; Jordan Simpson and his wife, Patton, of
Durham, NC; Kelsey and her husband, Ryan Koenig, of Santa Clarita, CA; and Jeffrey Simpson, of Raleigh, NC, as well as by much cherished great grandchildren Payton and James Fry, and Kirby Koenig. Joan was also a Jennens and part of a large and loyal family. She was predeceased by her brothers Buster and Basil and her sisters Joyce Knowles and Hazel Poole, but survived by her remaining sister,
Charlotte Baxandall, sisters-in-law Madeline Jennens, Joan Jennens, Rhoda Moss, of Victoria, brother-in-law Bill Knowles, and step-brothers Bob and Tom. Joan was instrumental in establishing the Sunnyvale Centre, the first sheltered workshop for the mentally challenged in the Valley. She loved all things beautiful, especially hats, her garden, extravagant flower arrangements, a
perfectly planned party and a well set table. She
adamantly maintained her independence in spite of the frailties of old age and was an example to all around her that appearance really does matter. Joan’s family is
enormously grateful for the support they received and the many years of dedicated loving care provided to Joan by Tender Loving Care Home Support, particularly Anne, Yvette and more recently, June, as well as by Lorraine and the compassionate and caring staff at Orchard Manor.
A service for Joan will be held at St. Michael and All
Angels Cathedral, 608 Sutherland Avenue, at 10:30 a.m. on
Friday, November 27, 2009 The family would appreciate those wishing to remember Joan do so by making a
