May 29, 2018
John Neilson "Neil" Wemp passed away peacefully at Hospice House on May 29, 2018, at the age of 101. Beloved father of Brenda, Derrick (predeceased in 1976), Keith (Margo Simpson) and Jill (Paul) Stringer. Much loved "Papa" to grandchildren Derek and Casey Wemp, Kirk (Eleah), Blair, and Nikki Stringer. Great-grandfather to Colbie and Harlow Stringer. Also survived by sister Marjorie Tooke and many nieces and nephews in Ontario. Neil was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean in 2002, after 53 years of marriage.

Neil was born and grew up on a farm on Amherst Island, Ontario, the eldest of 5 children of Arnold and Kathleen Wemp (nee Neilson). After a stint in the RCAF during WW II, Neil set out for adventure in British Columbia. He met Jean Kerr, with whom he shared a passion for horses. They settled in Kelowna, Jean's home town, and raised their family. Neil and Jean were active in the Kelowna Riding Club and later raised and raced thoroughbred horses. Neil was still involved in breeding race horses and working on Klimes' thoroughbred farm into his 90s.

In his later years Neil took great pleasure in his family and friends, St. Andrew's Anglican Church, his fitness classes at Parkinson's Recreation Centre, Rockets Hockey Games, his Friday program at Hawthorn, and walks and chats with neighbours in Sunrise Village. He was extremely proud of his milestone birthdays, and loved to tell people his age. Neil was an inspiration to others for his positive attitude and determination. He will also be remembered for his kindness and beautiful smile. The family would like to thank Drs. Whiting and McCauley, the staff at Lakeside Medicine Centre, KGH, and Hospice House, and the Interior Health staff who provided caring support at home.

A Memorial service followed by a reception will be held on Saturday June 16th at 2 pm at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 4619 Lakeshore Rd, Kelowna. At Neil's request, in lieu of flowers you may make a donation to your charity of choice.
