Myrtle Hilton

June 24, 2020

1920 – 2008

With regret, we announce the passing of Myrtle Hilton on August 20, 2008 at The Village at Smith Creek in Westbank,BC, age 88.

Born Myrtle Ruth Olson on March 31, 1920 in Lone Ridge, Alberta, she was the youngest of the nine children of Olaf and Hilma Olson.  The family moved to B.C. in 1927 where Myrtle went to school in Mission and Vancouver.  Myrtle was proud to serve in the RCAF during WWII, both in Canada and Britain. In 1950, she married Robert Hilton and they set up house in Langley where they gave birth to their 3 daughters before moving to Vernon in 1962 then Kelowna in 1968.  She was a great mom who was always there for her family – baking, cooking, chauffeuring - supportive and loving.  Myrtle was always a faithful and active member of the United Church, both as a Sunday school teacher and as a member of the United Church Women.  Her faith sustained her when she was predeceased by her youngest daughter, Lynn, in 1983, her husband, Bob, in 1996, her baby great-granddaughter, Naia Ruby, in 2006 and seven of her eight siblings.  Mourning Myrtle’s death are her loving sister, Ruby Foley, of Vernon, her two daughters, Joan (Rob) Harmer of North Vancouver and Lesley (Shon) Ostafew of Vernon, her 4 grandchildren, Jamie (Jennifer) McIntosh, Lisa (David Nelson) McIntosh, Melanie Harmer and Jennifer Harmer as well as her 3 great-grandchildren, Kynnan and Neko McIntosh-Nelson and Colin McIntosh.  She will also be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Village at Smith Creek (Westside Care Center) for the loving care they have given Mom over the past 8 years.  She loved their gardens and the birds they attracted, just as she had enjoyed Dad’s gardens and bird feeders through the years.   She may not have been able to travel anymore but she had many fond memories from her life’s journey.

A memorial service for Myrtle will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 1:00pm at St. Paul’s United Church, 3131 Lakeshore Rd., Kelowna.
