Nigel S. Brown

April 27, 1944 - August 31, 2017

It is with immense sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nigel Brown on August 31, 2017, at the age of 73.

Lovingly remembering him are his wife Jill Hilderman, his sons Matthew Brown and Justin Brown, his brother Stuart (Marion), nephews Jonathan (Katherine), and Alex (Annabel) and great nephews and niece: Douglas, Angus and Gabi.

Nigel will be missed by Jill's children who loved him deeply: Jonathan (Courtney), Kate (Nate), and David (Clarissa) and by his step-grandchildren Atticus and Ella.

Nigel was born in Oxford, England. Throughout his life he treasured his brief service in the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC).

He immigrated to Canada in 1967, travelled and worked before settling in Vancouver, BC, where he raised his family and enjoyed a career in the financial services sector. Later he moved to Salmon Arm, then Kelowna. He met Jill in 2008.

Nigel was a warm, funny and generous man; a marathon runner, keen cyclist and a dabbler at painting. He loved his family and friends, nature, Tofino, wineries, craft breweries and all his dogs over the years-with particular affection for the incredible Jake.

A man of great compassion and integrity, Nigel took action to help others. In 1983, Nigel and friend Robb Lucy made history by establishing the first Canadian chapter of Make-A-WishR; Nigel was subsequently bestowed the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

In 2008, Nigel established the charitable foundation Sing For Your Life as one of the first international chapters of the UK originating charity founded by his brother Stuart in 2005. The charity's proven program brings the wellness benefits of participatory-singing and music to seniors.

The family thanks Dr. Janet Evans for her unwavering support, the staff at Kelowna General Hospital for their care and in particular, ICU nurse Nikki for her compassion.

A Celebration of Nigel's Life will be held later in October. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sing For Your Life (www.sfylc.org) or Make-A-WishR (www.makeawish.ca).
