JOHNSON, RICHARD LOUIS
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of
Richard (‘Dick’ & ‘Rich’) Louis Johnson on December 7, 2012 in Kelowna, BC, at the age of 88. To those who knew him well, Dick was a quiet, gentle and much respected man to the end. Born August 22, 1924 in Binscarth, Manitoba,
he was a distinguished war veteran, automotive mechanic by trade and private aircraft pilot by avocation. He is
survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Florence Johnson (née Floer); four children: Jacqueline, Diana, Beverley, and Richard; six granddaughters: Lori, Nikki, Tammy, Megan, Meredith and Bronwyn; three grandsons: Gregory, Joseph, and Brent; one great-granddaughter Madeleine, and six greatgrandsons: Nicholas, Cody, Dylan, Wyatt, Lucas
and Tag. Dick began his career and life long passion for
automobiles upon his return to Canada in 1945 undertaking training as an auto mechanic in Halifax. He crossed
Canada by rail to BC's Creston Valley where he met and married Helen, and where their first three children were born. In 1950 the family moved to Marysville where he
established a Ford dealership and service station which he operated until his son, Ric and eventually grandsons Greg and Brent carried on with the business. Dick and Helen
retired to Kelowna/Lake Country in the late 70’s where Dick’s mechanical expertise kept him busy at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf Shop for several years as he eased into full
retirement. An avid Cribbage player, he taught his children to play and many of his grandchilren as well. Dick is also survived by elder brother, Charles Edward Rex Johnson (died April 2013) of Binscarth, and three younger siblings
respectively: Gwendolyn Alice Sarginson of Winnipeg, George William Robert Johnson of Kelowna
(formerly Vancouver), and Donald Russell Max Johnson
of Winnipeg. Our husband, father, brother, grandfather,
and great-grandfather will be in our thoughts always.
