Klukas

Ruth Elizabeth Klukas (née Carter) B.Sc., B.Sc. (Pharm.), OES

With her beloved children by her side Betty p assed away peacefully on November 11, 2009 in Kelowna, British Columbia at the age of 83. She is survived by her son Vernon Van and his wife Doris; her daughter Veva Maureen; and her cherished grandson Benjamin Carter, Veva’s son. Betty will be missed by the many friends and

acquaintances she made over the years. Betty was predeceased by her husband William Norman in 1972,

father Vernon Ernest in 1982 and mother Veva Irene twenty years ago. Born in Fresno California, the family moved to northern Alberta in the early 1930s where Betty grew up, went to school, married and started her family. They came to Kelowna in the mid-sixties. Betty’s curious spirit and exploring nature led her to a degree in Chemistry

(UofA 1949) and nearly thirty years later another in Pharmaceutical Science (UBC 1977). She then worked in her chosen field of clinical Pharmacy until her retirement in 1991. Much of her work was in Canada’s Arctic where she

collected many mementoes of the Far North. An avid horsewoman, her love for everything on paw, hoof or wing

was evident by the empathy she extended to all creatures great and small. For Betty, the best pet was one she had rescued from a bleak future. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kelowna SPCA or the Central Okanagan Hospice Association. The family will have an open house

to celebrate Betty’s long and eventful life on Sunday, November 22 from two to four in the afternoon at 1432 Flemish Street in Kelowna. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250 860-7077
